The adults and the college students of New Zealand are getting addicted to alcohol. The country presently has 700,000 citizens, who consume alcohol in sumptuous amounts. In youth, a fraction of 8% below the age of 20 takes heavy doses of alcohol, but the results are significant in adults.
Citing the state of the country with noteworthy level of heavy drinkers, the Government has been demanded to come with reforms to check the situation.
The attraction of alcohol among the college students is a threatening fact, as they are the future generation of the country. The local college officials are endeavouring to restrict the habit of consuming alcohol in students by making them aware about alcohol and its side-effects. Also, a helping hand is being provided to those students, who are suffering from problems related to drinking.
As per a report by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, from year 1998 to 2005, the number of deaths of college students due to alcohol increased to 1800 from 1400. It also revealed that students adopt drinking plus driving and there is a vogue of binge drinking among them, which is surging at a higher rate.
The college drinking was studied by Mark Wolfson, a professor of social sciences and health policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He said, "I think a lot of people in the field feel like there's been a cultural change where now, students drink to get loaded. It really is a serious public health problem".
The colleges need to address the drinking among students seriously, rather than just informing to the parents.
