Open-mindedness towards Suicide Issue Could raise the Concerns of Copycat

Open mindednessThe suicide rates among the teens in New Zealand are the highest in the OECD countries. So, there is a need of an eye on the reasons for the same, for that an open-mindedness is required, which is not supported by many.

In the New Zealand, a teenager is twice more likely to kill himself as compared to one teenager in Australia, who shows such tendency. The comparison is twelve times more likely than one in Greece. In 2008-09, Seventy-one New Zealanders of age 19 and below committed suicides.

Though Neil MacLean, Chief Coroner Judge advocates the frankness to discuss and report suicides, but the Prime Minister's chief science advisor, Sir Peter Gluckmanis of the view that such an attempt would allure many to commit suicide.

Gluckman said, "There is a lot of evidence that leads us to caution, that if we go into details about youth suicide in the practical sense, there is a high risk of copycat suicide".

He further added that the problem should be addressed in a better way, as they have found that depression is the major reason among the teens for giving up their life. The changing lifestyle is contributing to the altering behaviors of adolescents. The role of media and celebrities has started playing a significant part than parents and teachers.

New Zealand is positioned at 28 for child well being among 30 OECD countries and it has a 24th rank for factors relating to drinking, smoking and pregnancy in teenagers.

Gluckman suggested infusing more investments in schools to make the primary and pre-school education more qualitative. Also, weak families need to be provided such assistance.
