Need for drugs may be reduced for diabetics’ with surgery

diabeticsAccording to a recent study released this week the majority of people who underwent bariatric surgery to reduce weight were able to stop their dependency on diabetes medications, which led to a significant reduction in health-care costs.

The researchers at John Hopkins, Baltimore, observed 2,235 adults who took the stomach-reducing surgery and who also suffered from Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a common form of diabetes and is often related to weight-gain.

It was observed that six months after the surgery nearly 75% of patients had completely removed their diabetes medications and after two years almost 84.5% patients had just stopped taking the medication.

The study was funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. It was published in this month’s Archives of Surgery which is a Journal of the American Medical Association publication.

It was seen that many patients who underwent the surgery were able to stop the medications for Type 2 diabetes almost immediately after the surgery, much before they had lost several pounds of weight. This also proved that stomach hormones which are changed by surgery are better able to control blood glucose levels than weight loss.
