A total of 270 people have died due to the H1N1 virus since April 2010 in Maharashtra. Out of this number almost 35 were from Mumbai, which is just tenth of the total number. The state administration is therefore happy about the fact that the swine flu was a problem elsewhere in the state but not in the metro hub- Mumbai.
Additional municipal commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar said, “Mumbai has to be careful, but the situation is very much in control.” Last year the city was one of the worst hit in Maharashtra apart from Pune.
The doctors, on the other hand, are still not convinced and say that the people are as badly hit by swine flu in Mumbai but most of them are going undiagnosed. Dr Aashish Tiwari, director (medical services) of the upcoming Umrao Hospital in Mira Road said, “People are complaining of simple cold and cough lingering for 15 days. Some patients get a relapse of fever within 15 days. These could be various manifestations of the H1N1 virus.”
