Talks have been started between the Spanish airport operator BAA and its Unite union to avoid any type of strike action by the airport workers. The Unite union is planning to start the strike before the end of the school break.
The leaders of the Unite union have met the BAA bosses to resolve the pay dispute of more than 6000 workers including security staff, firefighters and engineers of six UK airports run by BAA. The airports listed for strike are Glasgow, Aberdeen, Stansted, Edinburgh, Heathrow and Southampton.
The talks were followed a voting process by the Unite union members in favour of strikes to protest against a 1% rise in pay.
According to the Unite, the workers had accepted a huge pay freeze in last year and also accepted changes to their pension scheme so they deserve a big pay rise now. The Spanish firm BAA had offered 1% rise in the payments of the workers but the Unite union was not satisfied with the percentage of rise.
