Q2 mobile phone sales have been reported to grow over 13.8 per cent to 325.6 million, a recent study by Gartner has claimed.
The research firm has stated, Android based mobile phones have been ranked as the top gainer in the three month period with a staggering 17.2 per cent share of total sales - just 1 per cent below the second best Research In Motion's Blackberry platform.
Carolina Milanesi, research vice-president at Gartner, stated: "We believe market share in the OS space will consolidate around a few key OS providers that have the most support from [mobile telcos] and developers, and strong brand awareness with consumers and enterprise customers."
Mobile phone manufacturers Nokia, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson have reportedly come as a disappointment with a dip in total share of mobile phone sales.
Nokia's Symbian OS is considered to be one of the infamous platform and reported of a dip in market share that came down from 51 per cent to 41.2 per cent over the quarter.
Apple's iPhone presently has only 2.7 per cent share, and in case of smartphone maker HTC the figure is out of the top ten.
