Fibromyalgia is a condition where the patient suffers from acute pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Around 5 million American, largely women, suffer from this painful condition. It also leads to sleep problems, severe fatigue, physical debilitation and even depression.
This condition is mostly treated by painkillers, antidepressants and muscle relaxants but with very little relief. However, there is now hope since a new research suggests that the ancient Chinese practice of tai chi may be an effective antidote.
It was a small study but was carried out very well. A group of 33 patients suffering from fibromyalgia were made to take tai chi classes twice weekly and 33 others enrolled to take stretching classes and educational seminars twice weekly. At the end of 12 weeks the tai chi group reported better relief from muscle pain, better sleep, and a higher quality of life with less depression.
It is not very well known as to how tai chi relieves pain but it does involve physical exercise, which has been shown to improve the condition.
Tufts Medical Center study authors wrote, “Controlled breathing and movements promote a restful state and mental tranquility, which may raise pain thresholds and help break the 'pain cycle.”
