The researchers at Yale are in the process of developing a form of ketamine which is an effective but very dangerous antidepressant that will be easy to use, safe and effective within hours of consuming it.
A recent study has pointed out on the effectiveness of the drug in the brain and why it works so quickly as compared to other antidepressants. The study was led by Ronal Duman who is a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at Yale, and George Aghajanian, professor of pharmacology.
The most popular antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft which are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) can take a long time before becoming effective.
Duman says, "Clearly, there is a need for a ketamine-like drug with rapid results." The benefits can be added in a way that studies indicate that about 70 percent of patients who are resistant to other antidepressants respond to ketamine.
Aghajanian "The pathway is the story. Understanding the mechanism underlying the antidepressant effect of ketamine will allow us to attack the problem at a variety of possible sites within that pathway."
