Alzheimer's May Get Reversed by Arthritis Protein

Arthritis-ProteinThe treatment which is said to completely reverse cognitive impairment in 20 days in mice may soon be able to do the same for humans, according to a new research. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in Britain, and this study could raise new hopes for almost 500,000 people who suffer from it.

A chemical found in the body, naturally produced to fight arthritis, can be used for the cure of Alzheimer’s disease by working on the brain condition. The researchers have found out that the tangles found in the brain, which are said to cause memory loss, can be undone by the help of this chemical, which is triggered by rheumatoid arthritis. The scavenger cells in the body are stimulated by the protein, in case of people suffering swollen joints because of rheumatoid arthritis.

The protein, namely GM-CSF and commercially known as Leukine, also reverses the effect partially, together with lessening the risk of getting the illness. In some cases, it has been seen that this memory impairment can even be completely reversed after treatment, the scientists at the University of South Florida asserted.

The study that has been tested in mice has been successful as this protein is said to have removed all the deposits left by Alzheimer's in the brain. Prof. Huntingdon Potter, a molecular medicine expert involved in the study, said, “Our findings provide a compelling explanation for why rheumatoid arthritis is a negative risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease”.
