Sprint offering free femtocells to customers facing coverage problems

Sprint offering free femtocells to customers facing coverage problemsIn an attempt to resolve the indoor coverage-related problems faced by its customers, Sprint is apparently offering free femtocells to its subscribers, though after a case-by-case evaluation of each situation.

The offering of free femtocells by Sprint, which incidentally was the first wireless carrier to foster femtocell technology via its 2007-launched Airave service, indicates a customer-friendly approach that the carrier is following to resolve the problematic issues that have often been complained about by its subscribers.

The Airave device that Sprint is offering essentially uses the home broadband connection of the customers, enabling them to make as well as receive calls in an area where the coverage is low. The device facilitates the automatic transfer of a call to Sprint’s cell network, once the customer leaves the house.

Talking by the case-by-case basis for the offering of the Airave device to Sprint customers, the company’s spokesperson Mark Elliott told FierceWireless: “Each customer situation is reviewed independently to determine whether the customer would qualify and benefit from Airave use.”

The Airave device being offered for free by Sprint is a new unit that supports EVDO wireless broadband; and can run up to six simultaneous calls.

Though the Airave device normally costs $99.99, including a monthly subscription to an Airave plan, Sprint is willingly offering the device to its customers facing “specific in-building coverage issues,” sans any additional monthly charge.
