Farmers in Rhode Island, New England contacted the U. S. Food and drug Administration, asking the agency to step in and help them through the salmonella infection dispersing through their egg production. More than half a billion eggs have been reported with confirmed cases of salmonella, during one month, which caused the panic to spread around among farmers.
The F. D. A. has refused to apply the vaccination systems used in U. K. before, saying that it did not found enough evidence to call for vaccination campaigns, and that the agency has already launched egg safety rules, which are expected to function properly in the next few weeks. These rules were mainly precautionary, as regular testing and cleanliness of refrigerators and equipments.
One of the residents in Rhode Island, Eli Berkowitz, a co-owner of Little Rhody Foods in Foster agreed with the FDA’s announcement saying that he did not witness any abnormality in the hens. He also added, “It’s not good for the name of the industry. We’ve had some calls; we’ve talked to some people. There are no issues here”.
Salmonella has estimated to compromise the lives of 142,000 U. S. citizens every year, of those who consumed contaminated eggs with salmonella.
