Google fixes Gmail glitch that caused repeated sending of emails

GmailAccording to Google’s Thursday night (US Pacific) post on Google Apps dashboard, the Gmail glitch that caused the repeated sending of email messages from some users’ accounts had been fixed.

The bug, which was first reported by Google on Thursday evening, affected a small percentage of Gmail accounts from which email messages were repeatedly sent again and again. As per Google, the malfunction affected less than 2.5 percent of the Gmail users.

Though Google reportedly resolved the issue in slightly over two hours after the first bug-warning post on the Google App Status Dashboard, and said that the Gmail service had been restored for affected users; the glitch apparently lasted several days – an indication that stems from user complaints in the Gmail Help forum.

In one of the complaints, a Gmail user, “student888” clearly said: “I e-mailed two people (who are not using Gmail) on August 20, 2010. Strangely enough, they received this same e-mail again on August 23, 2010. Then today
(August 24, 2010), they received the same e-mail once again. I know I didn't send them the same e-mail multiple times. Why does this happen?”

Meanwhile, noting that “the problem with Google Mail should be resolved,” Google’s tech support staff apologized for the Gmail glitch in the Thursday night post, and said: “Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”
