Apple’s updated iPod Touch may feature camera, FaceTime video chat

With Apple’s forthcoming event round the corner next week, there are speculations galore that the company’s likely update for the iPod Touch will include a front-facing camera or maybe even a rear one; as well as support for the much-hyped FaceTime video chat feature.

The speculations about the likelihood of the FaceTime feature on the updated iPod Touch largely results from the fact that while demonstrating the features at the Worldwide Developers Conference this year, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had promised that the company would ship “tens of millions of FaceTime devices,” including the iPhone 4.

Declaring prominently that FaceTime would be one of the most significant features of the iPhone 4, Jobs had said during the presentation: “I grew up here in the US with The Jetsons and with Star Trek…just dreaming about this, dreaming about video calling, and it is real now.”

The iPad and the iPod Touch are seemingly the prime candidates for the incorporation of the FaceTime feature, particularly because both the devices run on the same software as the iPhone. However, one of the key hold-ups is that both the devices presently lack a front-facing camera – or, in fact, any kind of camera.

What remains to be seen is that whether FaceTime will attract the masses – already there are several other methods of video chat, including Skype and iChat, but they have yet to find mass appeal!
