In the 90,000+ circulation category for daily newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald has grabbed the first prize at Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (PANPA), which is being held every year. Even last year, the prize was won by the Herald.
The award ceremony was held during a gala dinner in Sydney on Saturday night, where more than 450 newspaper executives marked their presence.
The Canberra Times, a product of Fairex, gained top prize in the 25-90,000 daily circulation category. Its non-daily rural publication, The Land, also attained the top position in the same category. Rod Quinn, Editor of The Canberra Times, dedicated the award to late Bruce Jones, who serves the paper as Deputy Editor.
The award for the Sunday newspaper was won by The Sun-Herald. The Hegarty Award for young media executives was given to Zac Skulander, an Advertising Executive at Fairfax.
Peter Fray, the Editor of the Herald, said, “This is a win for quality journalism. This is a win for the future of journalism, and this is a win for the future of Fairfax journalism”.
He further added that he was proud of the team effort employed across all the departments that led to a win-win situation.
In digital media categories, most of the awards were won by News Limited. The award for national newspaper website of the year was grabbed by AdelaideNow, while Australian‘s iPad application was awarded for innovation in digital publishing.
