As told by some sources, Intel Corp. is on its way to complete its $1.5 billion of deal to get hold of Infineon Technologies AG's wireless-chip unit. It is likely that the declaration of the deal will be made on Monday. But, no information has come from either of the Companies.
Other Companies that wanted to grab the Infineon unit were Samsung Electronics Co. and Broadcom Corp, as informed by the person familiar with the matter.
Earlier, Intel purchased McAfee Inc., the security technology firm, for around $7.7 billion in cash, on August 19. With the acquisition of the chip unit of Germany’s Infineon, the Company will make its second purchase in the two weeks.
With the purchase of Infineon unit, Intel will widen its chip market, as the chips of Infineon are used in smart phones, including Apple Inc.'s sophisticated iPhone 4
Intel, which has its dominance in the microprocessor market, recently got relieved of the allegations made against it by the Federal Trade Commission for limiting competition in the PC microprocessor market.
It was also told by Infineon earlier this month that it had been in talks with its customers Nokia and RIM for the sale of wireless solutions business. The Company stands at fourth position in terms of market share it captures in the chip market, i. e. around 5.9%.
