State Highway One will be closed on Father’s Day, because of which, commerce in Newmarket is expected to be a little constrained. Newmarket is one of the busiest shopping complexes in Auckland.
Because of this closing, more than 60,000 automobiles will have to be re-routed, as said by the Transport Agency, thus leading to a great trouble in the central Auckland. With this, it is said that everybody’s patience in the city is being put to test.
From Saturday night, the southbound ways of Southern Motorway that fall between Gillies Ave and Greenlane will be closed for 36 hours, and work will be carried out on the Newmarket bridges.
Also, this closure will pose a great impact on the trades situated in the area, said the Newmarket Business Association. This closure is on the Father’s Day, when all the shops are so busy. The businesses are already struggling due to recession, and this shut down will further add to the losses, said Chief Executive Cameron Brewer.
Some exclaim that this is the last chance left to walk on the bridge that is 20 meters above the city, so people can make the most of it now.
“It was a huge task to build a new structure over the top of Broadway, one of the biggest shopping streets in the country”, said Tommy Parker, of the New Zealand Transport Agency.
