Damages Worth $711 Million Awarded to Facebook in Anti-Spam Case

One of the most popular social networking sites, Facebook was awarded, as damages, a whopping $711.2 Million according to court documents. The damages were related to an anti-spam case which the site had taken up against Sanford Wallace, an internet marketer.

According to reports confirmed by the San Jose, California Federal Court on Thursday, Wallance did not appear for the formal hearing scheduled for September 18, neither did he oppose the motion.

In February, the celebrated social networking site had filed a case against Sanford Wallace stating that he was accessing profiles and accounts of millions of Facebook users without their permission. Also, as revealed by a post on the company's official blog, he was sending "phony mails and posts" to the users' walls.

"While we don't expect to receive the vast majority of the award, we hope that this will act as a continued deterrent", Facebook said in a blog post. Wallace has not made any comments and did not respond to an email sent to him by Reuters about the same. Wallace's email address was retrieved from court documents.
