Marijuana—A Chronic Pain Reliever

MarijuanaA novel study from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, has linked marijuana use with relief from chronic nerve pain.

Marijuana can assist an individual in getting relief from his or her nerve pain, caused due to injury or surgery, the research team found.

“Patients have repeatedly made claims that smoked cannabis helps to treat pain, but the issue for me had always been the lack of clinical research to support that claim”, explained Dr. Mark Ware, Director of clinical research at the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit of the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal.

The study involved over 21 men and women with an average age of 45, who suffered from chronic nerve pain.

The adults were told to inhale 25 milligrams of cannabis through a pipe in a single inhalation, three times a day. The procedure was carried for over a five-year period.

The cannabis was provided in three levels of potency of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, and in placebo form.

The study results claimed that adults smoking the highest level of marijuana, attributing to over 9.4%, admitted to feel less pain compared to those provided with smoking samples in placebo form.
