According to Computerworld, Google’s Gmail support forum was virtually flooded with several Chrome users complaining about the sudden play of some background video and ragtime-style music when they reached their inboxes.
With most of the Chrome users fearing that the new development was a likely indication of their systems being infected by malware, one of the users, “goz3”, wrote on the Gmail support board: “Those sound effects are quite unnerving when you first hear it. I really thought it was some sort of twisted virus.”
According to support forum post by a Google representative, the reason behind the sudden firing up of the video and the related music is that the video essentially promotes Gmail’s new Priority Inbox feature. Apologizing for the bug, the representative also said that Google was “working on fixing this.”
Incidentally, the users of other browsers, like Firefox and Safari, were not affected by the unwanted play of the video and music that the Chrome users complained about. In fact, only those Chrome users for whom Google has enabled the new Priority Inbox feature were affected.
The Priority Inbox feature, which will automatically rearrange a user’s messages in such a way that the most important messages are perched at the top of the inbox, is being rolled out by Google in stages. The company recently said that that the new feature will reach all Gamil users within the next week.
