Pleased with Auckland's Starship Hospital for reviving the life of her son, a campaign has been launched by an Invercargill mother to collect money for the renovation of its neurological and medical specialty wards.
The campaign, which has been named as the Starship Spring Clean, commences on Wednesday on internet auction site Trade Me where people can sell their discarded items and can also bid for the ones listed on it. The revenue from the sale and purchase of the goods will be provided to the hospital.
The auction would linger on for a complete month and could also be participated in by celebrities and sponsors. Those who would sell the goods will get success fees refunded by Trade Me.
The Starship Hospital worked nothing less than a wonder for Stephanie Mouat, the initiator of the campaign. She was taken to the hospital when she was expecting her now 18-month-old son Blake and her belly started to bulge.
The doctors at the hospital found out that her son had a huge tumor that started from his nose into his mouth and was adversely affecting his brain stem. Due to this, the child had a breathing problem, which was making him swell in the womb.
Mrs. Mouat told that before taking out his son from her womb, the surgeons introduced a tracheotomy into Blake's throat.
She said, "It's quite simple. If it wasn't for them, he wouldn't be alive; we have so much to thank them for".
It took four surgeries to eliminate the tumor. Blake still visits the hospital every year, but now he is doing fine.
