The strike of radiographers in Auckland is creating chaos for many patients who had already taken their appointments. One such sufferer is the father of a young child who, after being refused surgery this week, is urging the strikers to ponder over the situation of patients.
Seventeen-month-old Rebecca, the daughter of Gary Jones, who was affected with cerebral palsy from birth, requires operation. But, the strike is an obstruction to that.
Around 500 operations were cancelled by Auckland District Health Board, as the radiographers decided to go in for a three day strike on Friday for the issues related to remuneration. The next Tuesday, all the radiographers across the country will go for a 24 hours strike.
"He accepts the right to strike, but when it causes harm it is time to consider other approaches", said Mr. Jones.
As stated by radiographers, they were sorry for the disturbance, but were not ready to accept an unreasonable pay. They also added that they would prevent the nationwide strike if DHBs negotiated with them.
On the other hand, DHB told that the pay rise they had offered had been accepted by other workers in the health sector, so even radiographers should accept it. They also stated that due to this disruption, a lot many patients were losing their morale.
