In what marks the latest sign of the revival of Apple’s Macintosh line of computers, Autodesk Tuesday announced that it intends bringing back its flagship AutoCAD architecture, design, and engineering software to the Mac OS after 18 years.
In fact, along with offering a Mac OS X version of AutoCAD, Autodesk also intends releasing a free version of the software, called AutoCAD WS, for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The AutoCAD WS will allow users to review, edit, and share AutoCAD files on Apples’ popular mobile devices.
According to an Autodesk spokesperson, AutoCAD for Mac OS X will be a fully native application that will use Mac OS X libraries and native UI features. It will full advantage of Mac OS X capabilities, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of multitouch gestures on Mac notebooks, the Magic Mouse, and the Magic Trackpad for intuitive pan and zoom features.
Noting that Apple’s Mac line has been enjoying noteworthy revival in the recent times, Amar Hanspal, Autodesk’s Senior VP for platform solutions, said that the return of the AuotCAD to Mac “is an endorsement from our side that design and engineering customers are taking the Macintosh seriously again.”
Going by the information forwarded by Autodesk, the new AutoCAD software for the Mac will ship “this fall.” Similar to the Windows edition, the Mac OS X edition of the AutoCAD will cost $4,445 for a support subscription; and $3,995 without subscription.
