Ford has taken its plans to cater to the police department's requirements, quite a bit seriously. At least that is what one can understand from its behavior. Within a month of its release of a police version of its Taurus, the automaker has come up with a new version of Ford Explorer. This too has been designed keeping in mind the needs of policemen.
The vehicles are going to be called "Police Interceptor utility vehicle" and will be built to get atleast 20 per cent gas mileage which will be using the facilities assigned for Ford Crown Victoria. These were the cars that were built for mainstay police needs and the production of these are going to end by 2011.
As announced, the new crossover SUV will have a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 280 horsepower and will be running on E85 ethanol. Besides it will also be having a six speed automatic transmission and will be carrying around 800 pounds of guns, ammo and other material needed for police work.
Besides Ford, GM and Chrysler have been making the same kind of vehicles but Ford is the biggest in the league.
