The workers of Westin Hotel are on the verge of losing their jobs because of the dispute between KordaMentha and Westin Hotel. It is feared that as many as 100 employees could get the walking papers.
Westin Hotel is a five-star hotel in Auckland and many celebrities, including football star David Beckham, have stayed in this hotel. The hotel is already booked for the Rugby World Cup, which is slated to be held in 2011.
As a result of the dispute, many rooms of the hotel are vacant and only a few visitors are coming.
Unite organiser Joe Carolan says that several investors of other countries have never paid a visit to this hotel and because of their careless attitude the employees of the hotel will have to pay the price.
Carolan further said that it is unethical to tell the dedicated staff of the hotel to leave the job without giving any compensation money. He also said that many employees have family responsibilities or are the only earning members of their family.
The general secretary of Unite, Mike Treen, in an interview on RadioLIVE, said that such type of problem can occur in other hotels also as they have the same room title arrangements.
The hotel staff started the protest at around 3 p.m.
