New Zealand Director’s Slight Mistake Led to Arms Trafficking

Lu-ZhangYesterday, Lu Zhang, the 28-year old Chinese immigrant and Director of the New Zealand Company, which was held responsible for 75 cases of arms dealing in North Korea, appeared in court saying that she might have made one single mistake. She pleaded guilty for 20 of the 75 charges pressed against her.

The mistake that Zhang admitted was that she simply replaced the address of the New Zealand Company with her residential address. Minor as it might seem, this mistake resulted in Zhang managing to create 250 shell companies, which would be operating all around the world without she herself having any direct relation with the business of each.

One of the Companies that Zhang created was found to be dealing with weapons. Although she expressed her shock when she was informed that she is being accused of arms trafficking, the officials of the shell Company identified Zhang as a Director after the police started investigating the Bangkok incident. This case started last year when the police forces were able to capture a cargo plane, supplied with 35 tonne of rockets and grenades in Bangkok, hired by Zhang.

The cargo was claimed to have been shipped from Russia to Iran through North Korea.
