Number of Twitter users has increased 62 percent since April 2009Noting the fact that the accessibility of Twitter on mobile devices has led to a substantial gain in Twitter’s membership and traffic, the microblogging site’s chief executive Evan William said in a recent blog post that the site had had reached a new landmark of 145 million registered users.

Even though the number of Twitter users is way less than the over 500 million users of the popular social networking site Facebook, the microblogging service has witnessed a 62 percent increase in users since April last year, when the number was 105.8 million.

The blog post by Williams further revealed that accessibility on mobile devices has comprised nearly 27 percent of the growth of Twitter users, with at least 16 percent of the site’s new users signing on via a mobile application.

Adding that the number is likely to grow further, given the growth in the selection of official and third-party Twitter applications, Williams said: “As we had hoped in April, these clients are bringing more people into Twitter, and, even better, they are attracting and retaining active users. Indeed, 46 percent of active users make mobile a regular part of their Twitter experience.”

With Twitter having apps for devices like Android-based handsets, BlackBerry smartphones and the iPhone, Williams said that these new services make a contribution to user growth as well as new business opportunities – the two main factors leading to “long-term viability of the ecosystem.”
