HCL has developed a $35-tablet PC and claim that it will be launched by January next year. Government has already given a contract of 100,000 Android $35-tablet PCs to HCL.
It features a 9 inch Android touchscreen, and is named as 'Sakshat'. The device was displayed by HRD Minister, Mr. Kapil Sibal last month. He emphasized the importance of this device as an educational tool for schools and universities.
Indian government has already given an order of 100,000 units of $35-tablet to HCL and HCL has promised to manufacture these units by January 10.
As soon as these units will be manufactured, Indian government will hand over these devices to IIT-Rajasthan for intensive laboratory and field tests across the country. Indian government has decided to buy 1 million more units on the successful testing of the touchscreen tablet.
It was also said that $35tablet will be offered to universities as an educational tool by July next year. The price associated with this tablet is much less than OLPC project, which was offered at $100.
Te tablet weighs at 1.5 kg and measures 8.9-inch by 7-inch touchscreen. It runs on Android OS. The tablet is loaded with 2 GB of RAM, 3G and Wi-fi support, 2 USB ports and slots for microSD and SIM cards. IT has front-facing camera web camera.
