With the new roster under implementation and with the summer approaching, Starship Hospital is reported to be under a huge pressure of opting for specialist medical doctors in a view to fill the positions for resident doctors that are lying vacant.
The hospital is claimed to enter the roster from Monday 20th September under which the amount of staff would be lowered after hours. However, the patient admissions in the hospital would remain same.
"Where this represents change in practice, much of the additional load will fall on SMOs who are already being asked to make them available to cover gaps in the RMO roster. As always we are relying on our determination to continue to deliver good quality patient care to justify these impositions", the memorandum outlined.
Reports have claimed that the hospital had only a single doctor to attend to over 60 children last week, showering concerns of a significantly unsafe and deteriorated medical care for patients.
NZ Resident Doctors Association President Dr. Curtis Walker has claimed that they are merely forced to opt for specialists to fill in the vacant positions, tagging the plan as completely unsustainable and extremely wasteful.
