As per reports, New Zealand is one country which has the maximum number of people affected by gout, a form of chronic arthritis. This can be attributed to the fact that the New Zealanders consume high amount of food like shellfish, which has a high content of uric acid.
While it is known that men are more vulnerable to this disease, the main reason behind developing this disease is the presence of too much uric acid in a person's blood.
Francesca Holloway, from the Arthritis Foundation said, "But Maori and Pacific men are more likely to get it because they have a genetic predisposition to it. Their bodies aren't able to process uric acid as easily as others”.
There are various other reasons too besides overconsumption of alcohol and rich foods, say Holloway. And as for the New Zealanders, it is in their genes, and does not really get affected by the food they eat.
It has been seen that Gout mainly affects the big toe or another part of the foot, as this is the coldest part of the body and this is where the uric acid accumulates. Although, the treatment for Gout is too easy, but if it is left untreated, this disease can appear to be very painful.
Max Bania, ONE News reporter was shocked to find his uric acid level soaring so high. Though, he is not at a risk for gout, yet the level of uric acid was high.
