A study has indicated that enhanced treatment and widespread awareness about breast cancer has been helpful in decreasing the death rate of breast cancer, rather than mammograms.
It is reported that every year majority of the women in the United States go for a mammogram. But the study says that it might not be of any worth.
Medical experts are of the view that the research is the first of its kind to look at mammography benefits, keeping in mind the available treatments for breast cancer.
The specialists said that enhanced treatments with hormonal therapy and other targeted medications might wipe out benefits of mammography. It may not be regarded as a very important method to detect cancers, when they are too minor to feel.
However, the discussion over mammograms is still ongoing.
The new study revealed that when mammogram is merged with new therapies, the death rate decreased by 10%. However, it came to surface that mammograms alone could lower the rates by just 2%, or even zero.
The study appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Barnett Kramer, Associate Director for disease prevention at the National Institutes of Health said that the latest study is "very credible''.
He said, "This is the first time researchers used real populations to compare the effects of treatment and mammography in the modern era of treatment''.
