Being really far away from her tropical home, a green sea turtle that was found in a critical condition after it was washed up on Otaki beach is undergoing screening now.
A member of the public found the 70 centimeter long turtle on Wednesday.
After taking the animal to the university's Manawatu campus, it was found that she was suffering from fractured shell and pneumonia.
Australia’s North Queensland coast is the nearest known habitat of these turtles.
Kerri Morgan, Wildlife Veterinarian informed about the condition of green sea turtle, she was shocked because of the cold water. "We've never had a sea turtle. It's very unusual for them to come this far south. We were all relieved she was alive this morning, but she might not make it”.
The turtle had to be put on a drip, and her flippers were taped so that she could undergo scanning process in the CT scanning machine.
Ms. Morgan said the team would take a biopsy of her lungs in sometime, to figure out what form of pneumonia she has and the way to treat it.
If it recovers, the turtle might be sent to a rehab center, however, sending her to Australia maybe tricky.
