FDA Has Evolved Under Obama’s Administration

FDA Has Evolved Under Obama’s AdministrationThe US Food and Drug Administration has undergone a drastic change. Earlier, the organization’s employees had to go with the agency’s decision, even if they were not in favor of it personally.

But now under Obama’s management, things are taking a new turn, especially after the FDA ruled on the contentious diabetes drug, Avandia.

The FDA took a mid way when posed with the choice to allow Avandia remain in the market or to ban it completely. The medicine would continue to be sold, but under stern limitations.

It is reported that a number of leading scientists did not agree with the agency’s decision.

The explanation extended for this decision is included in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, F. D. A.’s Principal Deputy Commissioner said, “I think that F. D. A.’s credibility really depends on being able to explain its decisions well. We can’t expect people to think that F. D. A. has decided, therefore it’s the right answer”.

It is believed that some modifications were already underway, but they speeded up under the Obama administration. The FDA was exposed to rising doubts if it was taking the right decisions in deciding the fate of the drugs.
