Waikato University reported that it managed to secure around $5.5 million in Marsden research funding, which more than double the amount which was secured in 2009 which was $2.58 million only. The money would be used to implement nine of the projects which have been in progress.
Wayne Mapp, the Minister of Research, Science and Technology, praised the university and the effort that the researchers pulled in order to get a firm hold on the Marsden Fund grants. He also said that the Marsden Fund would be supporting the finest researches of New Zealand, which would result in the scientists working harder as they know that now more people would benefit from their work. The funds, according to Minister Mapp, would expand the talents of the researchers and their knowledge of the world.
"Through the Marsden Fund the Government is also helping develop the skills and knowledge of our most talented researchers. The Marsden Fund delivers many benefits. That is why this Government has increased investment in it”, Mapp said.
The Minister said that the Government increased the investments in Marsden in the year 2009 by $36 million. The Government is contributing in Marsden Fund by $60 million employed in more than 100 research projects.
