Handing Postcards to Visitors Prohibited by Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board

Tony RyallProhibition has been inflicted upon doctors working in Nelson from handing out postcards to their visitors and patients in order to support their fight concerning wages and other working conditions.

The postcards are addressed to Health Minister, Tony Ryall in order to highlight the possibility of doctors in New Zealand making a move to join hospitals overseas.

The National President of the Resident Doctors' Association, Dr. Curtis Walker said the Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board was the sole to have constrained its doctors from giving out the cards.

Chief Operating Officer of the board, Keith Rusholme said the hospital was in a neutral territory in terms of politics.

"Patients and visitors in New Zealand hospitals should not be subjected to the political demands of any group”, Mr. Rusholme said.

A spokesperson for District Health Boards New Zealand, Karen Roach supported the Nelson decision, stating that junior doctors must give priority to patients’ health.

The junior docs in the nation have been talking with district health boards for over nine months.

As said by Dr. Walker, the board’s attitude towards junior docs made doctors very angry.

Junior doctors have voted towards getting consent over strike action.
