Spokesperson of Land Overseas Investment, David Parker has said that the government is not doing enough to control foreign ownership of New Zealand's land. He said that there has not even been half- hearted effort on part of the authorities and that a lot of investment has been happening in the real estate sector of the country.
Parker said that since the foreigners have access to cheaper capital, it is beneficial for them to have tax-free credit gains in New Zealand by buying real estate in the country. In such a situation there is no benefit to New Zealand and with time the whole situation will become more clear and stronger.
Pushing his party, Parker said that Labour Party was the only party that was capable of saving the nation from the situation. National, he said, has found itself having no answer to the situation.
He also took reference from the last speech that the Finance Minister had given. He had said that the strategic assets tests are nonsense and confusing. There is no need to panic in terms of overseas investment.
