Only $11.7 billion Pledged for Global Fund

Global FundThe Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria didn't even meet its minimum target of $13 billion funding on Tuesday that was required to achieve the current goals. This is an indication that the fight against AIDS will be weakened due to inadequate funds.

The Global Fund was able to get pledges of $11.7 billion from 40 countries at a two-day conference held in Manhattan. But, it was expected by the fund that it would raise $20 billion.

Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, the fund's Executive Director stated that there would be no reduction for those who are already receiving the treatment, but the targets for the coming years would be kept lower.

"We deeply appreciate the amount raised, but that we need to recognize that it's not enough to meet expected demand and will lead to difficult decisions in the next three years", said Dr. Kazatchkine.

The amount pledged by the United States stood at $4 billion, a 40% rise over the last donation. No contribution came from Italy and Spain. The donations from France, Canada and Norway climbed up 20%. Russia pledged $60 million while China donated $14 million. No commitment came from Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

The AIDS activists are raged over the pledged contributions and especially with the American contribution.
