Experts Say, Diabetes could Bankrupt New Zealand

type 2 diabetesAccording to a Ministry of Health report, 1 out of 10 adults in New Zealand will suffer from type 2 diabetes in the coming 20 years in a ‘tsunami’ of disease which could bring the country on the verge of bankruptcy.

Experts say that by the year 2028 at least 10% adult population and by 2036 about half a million population will be affected by type 2 diabetes.

Chris Baty, who is the Diabetes New Zealand National President, compared the number with the number of people who may die in a tsunami.

The percentage of the people suffering from diabetes is increasing by 8% every year.

Experts say that some concrete immediate measures should be taken to prevent the increase in the percentage and to save the country from getting bankrupt.

Suzanne Snively, who is an economist in PricewaterhouseCoopers, said that the Government spent only 3 to 4% of the health budget on diabetes 10 years ago, but it is estimated that by 2021, the cost will increase by 15%.

Obesity is also a major problem in New Zealand along with diabetes, and it has become a trend that obese person after a certain age will also suffer from type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is mostly found in Maori and Pacific Islanders, but people from Asian countries are also increasingly affected with this disease.
