Medsafe to Decide Fate of Weight Loss Drug ‘Reductil’

ReductilThough on the recommendations of a medical watchdog, a weight loss drug has been pulled out from Australia, but its fate in New Zealand is still to be decided.

As for now, in New Zealand, the weight loss drug Reductil is still being marketed. The sale of the drug is also not allowed in the United States.

In the Australian market, the drug's sale was ceased following the appraisal from the medical watchdog Medsafe on Friday, which brought out that the drug can cause heart attack or stroke. The review on the drug came from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, which tightens its rule for prescribing a drug in June.

For carrying on the sale of Reductil in New Zealand, its manufacturer Abbott is having discussion with Medsafe. No information has come from the company or from Medsafe about the fate of the drug.

As per the pharmaceutical Company, if the watchdog comes with a negative result, it would halt the selling of drug immediately.

Earlier this year, the commercialization of sibutramine was prohibited by the European Medicines Agency

"It and the Medicines Adverse Reactions Committee will meet to obtain a final recommendation on the balance of benefits and risks of sibutramine treatment", says Medsafe.
