The Big Bike Fix-up was able to attract people from across the city, as one could see flat tyres and rusty bikes all across the horizon of New Plymouth's new walkway. The Fix-up was a part of a promotional event and was organized to provide free services to all types of bikes.
Bike owners were provided with free services for a span of four hours, whereas the funds were extracted from the Walking Cycling Model Communities by the District Council of New Plymouth. Those bike owners whose bikes needed major repairs were offered free vouchers worth $25 at bike shops.
The people who were providing the services were volunteers who worked for bike shops like O2 Project and Cycle Inn. The volunteers had a tough day, as they ended up fixing problems for a numerous number of bikes.
Nathaniel Benefiel, the sustainable transport coordinator for the District Council while talking about the event announced that similar events were being held at other different places like Wellington and Christchurch. The events were being held as a part of a nationwide initiative managed by the Cycling Advocates Network.
He added the volunteers were pitched in by the group known as the North Taranaki Cycle Advocates. The concept of the initiative was to ensure that bikes in New Zealand were safe and not a hazard to anyone, except from promoting cycling.
