The business loss of between $15 million - $20 million was sustained by Virgin Blue due to the crash of its reservation system, operating system and check-in system during the last month. For 11 days, there was serious disruption to passengers and flights due to the computer system which crashed on 26 September.
Nationwide, Virgin Blue had to cancel many flights, or the staff had to process the check-ins by hand. Virgin Blue has to put many passengers overnight in hotels and bear the additional cost, as the flights had to be delayed. The delay affected thousands of passengers, who were travelling by the airline.
Virgin Blue has warned that to recover the full cost of the crash of its Accenture/Navitaire computer system, it is willing to pursue every avenue possible. Before the reservation systems failure, as per company's figures, they had seen increase in passengers due to improving conditions, when they compared it to last year's figures. Last month, Mr. Andrew David, Virgin Blue's group executive hinted that they are discussing the possibility to take legal action against Navitaire.
