Another two drugs would receive funding for the fight against HIV, the development of introducing two new drugs in the market aimed at combating the ever evolving virus. The new drugs, Darunavir and Etravirine would be up for sale from the 1st of November.
The decision to introduce the drugs has been initiated by the state-run agency Pharmac.
The drug agency has stated that even though the treatment of patients with antiretroviral drugs has resulted in the disease turning into a chronic one instead of a fatal disease, still a need to discover new medicines to battle HIV continues, as the virus has found ways to mutate itself and show more resistance to conventional remedies.
Pharmac, while waging a fierce battle against HIV has already used $18 million worth of funds.
The drug agency has also estimated that the two new medicines would damage the coffers of Pharmac by $1.6 million over the period of next five years. The drug Darunavir would be introduced in the market as Prezista, while Etravirine would be introduced as Intelence.
The two medicines would join an ever increasing list of 17 HIV drugs being used by Pharmac to provide help to 1,600 Kiwis affected by the virus.
