Demand for Independent Aged Care Commission and Commissioner

Demand for Independent Aged Care Commission and CommissionerThe Greens and Labour in a report released on Aged Care said that they back and promote Grey Power’s proposal of forming an independent Aged Care Commission and Commissioner.

For a long time, Grey Power has been demanding the revamp of the Aged Care services in order to improve rest homes and home support services for the elderly people in New Zealand.

Grey Power’s National President, Roy Reid is hopeful that the important suggestions mentioned in the report will be implemented as soon as possible to offer better health care to older people of the nation.

Such an overhaul of the Aged Care services has been in demand after Labour and Green parties jointly with Grey Power decided to inspect the quality of rest homes and home support services in New Zealand.

They found several shortcomings in the Aged Care across the country and urged for immediate amendments in the health care policies for older population.

The report says that there is acute shortage of staff in this sector, services are unregulated, and main aim of the sector is to earn profit rather than provide effective health care to elderly patients.

The report also mentions that the average salary of the caregivers in the country is also very low.

One caregiver says, “In terms of quality in aged care, you get what you pay for. If wages are grossly low, then the care will be of that quality”.
