Eight HPV Types Behind Cervical Cancer Identified

Eight HPV Types Behind Cervical Cancer IdentifiedResearchers have reportedly identified eight types of human papillomavirus (HPV) serving the culprit behind 90% of cervical cancer cases across the globe.

The virus types identified are claimed to serve as a podium for the development of the next generation of vaccines.

Cervical cancer cases due to HPV dying this year are estimated at around 328,000.

An international research team, spearheaded by Silvia de Sanjose of the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona conducted a study involving 10,575 cases of invasive cervical cancer across 38 countries.

The research carried an analysis into the types of HPV that serve as the cause in majority of cervical cancer cases across the world.

As per the study results, types 16, 18, 45, 33, 31, 52, 58, and 35 in descending order of frequency are responsible for the incidence of the disease in more than 90% of cases.

The study was published in the Lancet medical journal on Monday.

The findings posited by the research reinforced "the rationale for prevention of cervical cancer through use of existing vaccines and would aid the development of second-generation vaccines against multiple HPV types”, De Sanjose was quoted as saying.
