Ford’s new 2011 T6 Ranger was unveiled at Sydney’s Australian International Motor Show, which is taking place from October 15-24.
The car is not planned for release in North America, but will be marketed in 188 countries, making it a global vehicle. The Ranger is the latest in Ford’s ‘One Ford’ initiative, a project driven by the company’s Australian arm and aimed at creating a single global compact truck platform. The project involves engineers and designers from different countries in order to harness new levels of product commonality around the world.
The Ranger, which was developed in cooperation with the new Mazda BT-50, features a range of technologies, including rear park assist, trailer sway control and adaptive load control. The range-topper in this line is the XLT Double Cab model. The family of compact trucks also includes single and extended body styles, with a full SUV-like wagon still in development.
The model is almost entirely new: it is 90mm longer, featuring a new chassis frame, front and rear suspension and steering systems. It also boasts a 3.2-litre five cylinder common rail turbodiesel engine, along with 2.2-litre turbodiesel and 2.5-litre petrol, each with six-speed manual transmissions.
As for the shell surrounding the horsepower, the Ranger’s raked windscreen angle, chiseled nose and blade-shaped side creases give it a dynamic look. The interior, inspired by ergonomically-designed tools and Casio’s G-Shock watches, is impressively modern.
The price is as yet unreleased.
