Following the disaster that had struck Haiti in January, the country is reeling under a new turmoil. The North-West of Haiti is currently facing a cholera outbreak among children; the government has been making immense efforts to limit the outbreak. However, the cholera is currently moving towards the capital of the country, Port-au-Prince.
The situation in Haiti just seems worse, as millions of people who had been displaced in the earthquake that had hit the country earlier, are still living in camps. The presence of people in camps and the unhygienic conditions can further worsen the rate of infection of cholera.
While visiting the camps, Laura Trevelyan from BBC has reported that trained actors from the country were performing and enacting in skits and plays, to educate people on how to avoid the disease and how to prevent themselves from contracting cholera.
According to reports, the death toll for cholera has reached 300 in Haiti by Tuesday and the number is expected to rise further. It is being stated by experts that the island nation of the Caribbean, might be affected in the long run by the disease.
According to health authorities, the disease has been prevalent for a week now and that it has mostly raised its ugly head in Central Artibonite and Central Plateau regions. The numbers of deaths has reached 295 while the number of cases has swelled to 3,612 in 7 days.
