The Health Ministry realizes a project that aims to improve Te Whare o Matairangi, the facilities at Wellington Hospital that are meant for patients with mental health conditions.
Tony Ryall, Health Minister, states that the project will start to be realized in the following year and approximately take up to 14 to 18 months. The Capital and Coast District Health Board funds the $5 million project out of their own budget.
During the period of upgrading and reconstructing the building, plans are already made to relocate patients. Nigel Fairley, the Executive Director of Mental Health Services, points out: "The current environment impinges on the delivery of modern care methods, while the building is also in desperate need of refurbishment due to its age. The work being carried out will include earthquake proofing and a new layout of patient accommodation and treatment areas that will allow for better flow for patients and staff”.
Experts articulate their approval, stating that the realization of the refurbishments is highly necessary as it will provide more space and a generally high-quality environment for the hospital staff and its patients. The measures are assumed to assist in the recovery processes for many New Zealanders.
