Exporter, Zespri is in the process of considering the outsourcing of New Zealand's Kiwi production to Vietnamese farmers.
But this plan is being questioned by businessman Tony Gibbs, who is outraged by prospects that money for this program is coming from taxpayers' assistance and is channeled through the overseas aid fund.
In retaliation Tony has filed a case against Zespri and has asked that all such funding should be stopped immediately. He has also questioned the export monopoly that Zespri has got.
Meanwhile, in a statement given by the Zespri's general manager of global supply, Simon Limmer it was said that the company is considering payments to be made to the Southeast Asian farmers for growing kiwifruit. He said that Vietnam was on their radar and they are soon going to invest in the country.
He further said that Asia was a growth market for Zespri- particularly China. The company is also looking at the markets from the off-season angle for which New Zealand is not feasible.
Zespri already has got dedicated growers in Korea and Japan. Across the world there are millions of farmers who work as licensed farmers.
