One of the cancer survivors, Lovina Gujral who is 40, says to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness Day this week on Sunday that one does not have to feel dejected with the disease because there is still life beyond breast cancer and today she herself is free from her cancer. She was the eight woman, in three generations to be diagnosed with the deadly disease.
She is working as the head of corporate communications with a Gurgaon-based MNC and was diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2008 in December when she detected a small lump in her right breast during a self examination.
It was found that her 3cm lump was cancerous but since the disease was detected in early stages her treatment began immediately with eight sessions of chemotherapy and radiation therapy along with surgery.
She says, “I knew about the symptoms because of a history of the disease in my family but there is a lack of awareness among the general population, so many patients find out they've got breast cancer when it is already too late.”
