Weekend Admissions Not Good for Stroke Patients

Stroke PatientsA novel research has outlined that patients with a history of strokes are more highly vulnerable to die if they're admitted to the hospital on the weekend instead of a weekday. The surprising thing is that the claim has been made irrespective of how severe the stroke was.

"Stroke is not the only condition in which lower survival rates have been linked for people admitted to hospitals on the weekends", pointed study author Dr. Moira K. Kapral.

The study by Toronto researchers was released on Monday in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study conducted by Canadian researchers observed data from over 21,000 patients with a stroke history, who were admitted to 11 stroke centers in the province of Ontario. The study included patients with their first stroke only, the team outlined.

As per the study findings, patients admitted to hospitals on weekends following a period of seven days after having a stroke showed an 8.1% risk of dying, while those admitted on a weekday were found to be at a
7% risk.

The results were independent of age, gender, stroke severity, other medical conditions, and the use of blood clot-busting drugs.
