Changes in the copyright legislation have got support from an unexpected quarter. Some of the offenders of the new rules have seen their connections getting terminated.
The Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill which has brought forward the amendments are aimed at making the material for the copyright owners more effective. This is being done so that the illegal material that is present on the Internet can be controlled and checked.
These changes have been welcomed by Commerce Minister Simon Power as some of the changes are done based on the recommendations made by the commerce select committee.
The bill has provided for a three-notice regime aimed at deterring illegal file sharing and the jurisdiction of it is going to be extended to the Copyright Tribunal. This tribunal is going to listen to complaints and also dish out penalties if and when required.
The committee had said that penalties and suspension should have been included in the Copyright Act. These removals should not be put into action unless and until the notice process and the remedies which are given by the Copyright Tribunal become ineffective.
